SHOULD YOU USE A HOMEMADE DRAIN CLEANER?

Drain clogs are a common plumbing problem. But that doesn't mean this irritating issue allows for a do-it-yourself (DIY) repair approach. If you've considered clearing the clog with a homemade drain cleaner, take a look at what you need to know about this do-it-yourself alternative.

What Are Homemade Drain Cleaners?

Before you dig deep into whether a DIY drain cleaner works or not, you need to understand what these supposed clog-cutters really are. There are more than a few homemade drain cleaner recipes available online. These typically include one of two methods - vinegar and baking soda or boiling water.

Why Do Homeowners Choose Homemade Cleaners?

Whether you use vinegar and baking soda or hot water, both these DIY options are less caustic and dangerous than the commercially available chemical versions. Many homeowners choose to blend their own drain de-clogger mix for safety's sake - especially families with pets, young children, or anyone who is sensitive to chemical ingredients.

Along with safety, natural products such as vinegar, baking soda, or water, aren't likely to damage your pipes. In comparison, chemical cleaners have the potential to cause corrosion and other damage to drains, fixtures, and your home's pipes. Use of chemical cleaners can result in serious plumbing problems and expensive repairs or replacements.

How Do Homemade Drain Cleaners Work?

If you built a tabletop volcano for your elementary school science fair (or helped your child to create one), you understand how vinegar and baking soda cleaners work. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) combines with the acidic vinegar to create a bubbling chemical reaction.

The bubbling action is behind the functional theory of a baking soda and vinegar drain cleaner. In a perfect world, the bubbles would fizz and loosen caked-on debris. This would clear the clog and let your drains flow freely.

Unlike the bubbling action of baking soda and vinegar, boiling water supposedly works by loosening drain debris or breaking down clogs into smaller pieces.

Do These Homemade Methods Work?

In theory, these methods should at least partially work. But there are several factors that go into drain cleaning. These factors impact the product's ability to effectively clear the clog and stop a plumbing backup.

Factors that can impact a DIY drain cleaner's ability include:

  • The debris or clog material. What made the clog? A thick ball of congealed grease, a clump of hair, or your child's mini toy truck may not respond well to either natural method.
  • The size of the clog. While baking soda and vinegar may bubble a thin layer of debris away, it won't remove a big clog. Larger clogs aren't likely to respond well to homemade cleaner methods.
  • The placement of the clog. How deep into the drain is the clog? By the time the baking soda and vinegar mix or hot water gets to the clog, it may have lost its effectiveness. Deep clogs (especially those in the main drain) require professional help.
Even though homemade cleaners typically won't effectively remove full clogs, they can help to keep your pipes clean. If you have chemical concerns, switch your regular commercially made cleaning products for these natural options.

What Should Homeowners Use Instead of DIY Cleaners?

If homemade drain cleaners don't do the trick, how should you clear your clogs? The answer depends on the location and severity of the clog. Most homeowners can unclog a minor toilet backup with a plunger. But some clogs (in your toilet and the other drains) require a stronger method.

Instead of caustic chemicals, power tools, or anything else you aren't sure how to use, call a professional. A plumber has the expertise, experience, and equipment to effectively remove the clog and clear your drain the right way.
